Dr. Seuss Biography
You’ll find 17 Dr. Seuss quotes below, but first here are a few interesting facts about his life.
You probably know that Dr. Seuss is a well-known author of children’s books, but his given name was Theodor Seuss Geisel. He was born in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1904 to parents who emigrated from Bavaria (present-day Germany). He began using his pen name, Dr. Seuss, in 1928, which would have originally been pronounced “Zoice.”
Ted Geisel (Seuss) graduated from Dartmouth College in 1925 and went on to Oxford University from 1925-1926. It was while at Oxford that he both met his first wife, Helen Palmer, and also realized that his passion was for drawing and not writing. It was then that he returned to the United States and began his career working in advertising. He became well-known after drawing a cartoon for a popular insecticide, Flit, in 1928. He penned the phrase, “Quick, Henry, the Flit!” which became a popular household expression. He went on to create ads for Holly Sugar, NBC, Ford, General Electric, and many others.
Although Seuss published his first children’s book, And To Think I Saw It on Mulberry Street, in 1937, he did not become a well-known author until The Cat in The Hat was published in 1957. He then went on to write and illustrate 44 books in his lifetime. However, he actually penned a total of 66 books if you include books illustrated by others, written under another name, co-authored, and books published after his death in 1991.
